South Sydney Rabbitohs are one of the founding clubs of rugby league, established in 1908 in the first year of the NSWRL competition. The club takes its name from the rabbit sellers who worked the streets of South Sydney in the early 20th century, and has always represented the working-class communities of the inner south of Sydney. The Rabbitohs dominated the early decades of the competition, winning 20 premierships between 1908 and 1971 — a record that remains unmatched in the history of the game.

After a 43-year premiership drought, the Rabbitohs won their 21st title in 2014 under coach Michael Maguire, with a team featuring Sam Burgess, Greg Inglis, and John Sutton. The victory ended the longest drought in the club's history and was celebrated with extraordinary scenes across South Sydney. The club had famously been expelled from the competition in 2000 before a fan-led campaign — supported by co-owner Russell Crowe — secured their reinstatement in 2002. The 2014 premiership was the ultimate vindication of that fight, and the Rabbitohs remain one of the NRL's most beloved and best-supported clubs.
