Founded in 1960 as the football team of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Tigres spent their early decades as a mid-table presence in Mexican football before rising to become one of the country's dominant clubs. Their transformation accelerated in the 2010s under coach Ricardo Ferretti, who led the club to five LIGA MX titles between 2011 and 2017 and established Tigres as a genuine powerhouse of the Mexican game.

The arrival of French striker André-Pierre Gignac in 2015 — from Olympique de Marseille — was a watershed moment. Gignac became a legend in Monterrey, helping Tigres reach the FIFA Club World Cup final in 2021 where they faced Bayern Munich.
